The PlanMatch guide

Compare the coverage. Keep your life in view.

A useful comparison looks at how you get care, not just what a plan advertises.

The two main approaches

General differences; specific coverage rules vary.
QuestionOriginal MedicareMedicare Advantage
How do I get care?Generally, providers that accept Medicare.Often through a plan network; check out-of-network rules.
Where do prescriptions fit?Usually through a separate Part D plan. Most plans include Part D.
How are medical costs limited? No annual out-of-pocket cap without supplemental or other coverage. An annual limit on covered Medicare health services.
What about supplemental coverage?Medigap may help with certain out-of-pocket costs.Medigap does not pay Medicare Advantage cost sharing.

Compare the details you will use

Use each plan’s exact name, identifier and coverage year. Confirm providers, prescriptions, pharmacy choices, service area, premiums, cost sharing and approval requirements. Ask how care works if you travel or live in more than one place.

Keep a written record of questions you have not resolved. A blank space on a comparison sheet should mean “needs an answer,” not “probably fine.”

Put extra benefits in context

Dental, hearing, vision, OTC or food benefits may be useful, but their limits and eligibility can differ. Ask for the benefit terms and avoid combining amounts from different plans.

Our seven extra-benefit questions can help you prepare.
